Explore La Costera

Acapulco’s main drag is the Costera Miguel Alemán. This road follows the coastline around the bay and is where most of Acapulco’s shops, restaurants and nightclubs are located, as well as significant shopping malls such as La Gran Plaza and Plaza Bahía. 

Stroll Around the Zocalo

Disparate planned visitor resorts like Cancun, Acapulco is a real Mexican town. Nowhere is this more obvious than in Old Acapulco, the heart of which is Acapulco’s Zocalo. Officially the “Plaza Juan Alvarez,” this is the central public square. It is a tree-shaded plaza where locals and visitors congregate.

Take a Glass-Bottom Boat Ride to Isla La Roqueta

Glass-bottom boat tours are offered from Playa Caleta, allowing you to enjoy a fun day on this island ecological reserve. The glass-bottom boat will enable you to observe the sea life as well as a submerged statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe on your way to Isla La Roqueta. 

Visit the San Diego Fort

This star-shaped fort was constructed at the beginning of the 17th century to defend ships carrying merchandise from Asia, from pirates. The fort was reconstructed in 1778 after an earthquake caused some damage.

Hike Around Palma Sola Archaeological Site

Located on a mountainside six kilometers northeast of Old Acapulco within El Veladero national park, Palma Sola ​archaeological site features two-thousand-year-old petroglyphs and rock carvings made by the Yopes, Acapulco’s earliest known inhabitants. 

Watch the Sunset at Hotel Los Flamingos

The Hotel Los Flamingos was built in the 1930s and purchased in the 1950s by members of the “Hollywood Gang” (John Wayne, Johnny Weissmuller, Erroll Flynn, and Cary Grant, among others). A 1950s photo collection in the hotel lobby allows a nostalgic look at the hotel’s former owners. 

Located on Mexico’s Pacific coast, Acapulco was Mexico’s first major tourist destination, and it’s easy to see why. Its location on the picturesque Bahia de Acapulco, its extensive tourist infrastructure — revamped in recent years, and the city’s vibrant nightlife, not to mention its excellent beaches all add to its undeniable appeal.

Stockholm

Most visits to Sweden begin in Stockholm, and for an excellent reason. Stockholm is a beautiful, waterside city that will have you staring slack-jawed at skylines full of spires. Gothenburg

Sweden’s second-biggest city serves as a nice counterpoint to the glitz and glamour of the capital. The locals are more laid back, for one thing, and it’s also cheaper and easier to explore than Stockholm, where high prices are a part of everyday life.

That’s not to say that Gothenburg isn’t glamorous in its way: go beyond the ugly port’s tall cranes and shipping containers, and you’ll find beautiful parks and gardens, as well as serene, car-free islands that harbor sleepy swimming spots.

Gotland

For many Swedes, summer means a trip to Gotland, Sweden’s biggest island. Marooned in the Baltic, it’s a laid-back haven with some of the country’s best weather, not to mention stunning sandy beaches, and thick forests that seem to made for hiking and biking.

The far north

Sweden’s far north is home to some of Europe’s most breathtaking landscapes. In winter, grand rivers and waterfalls freeze to a halt, and vast forests bend under the weight of too much snow. Sometimes Lund gets overlooked as visitors rush through southern Sweden on their way to or from Copenhagen. But this seriously old city has been around since the period of the Vikings and is one of the amazing places to explore if you want to get your head around the whole region’s history.

Dalarna

Red cottages, blue lakes, and verdant pine forests: if you want a glimpse of the ‘real’ Sweden, the central province of Dalarna should be high on your list of places to visit. Nowhere else matches in the country for its picture-postcard charm, and during the summer it’s a favorite holiday retreat for Swedes, who come for a bit of swimming, camping, and sightseeing.

Luleå

The north’s most relaxed city is fast becoming a hub for technology and culture, with a disproportionate number of galleries and design shops. Facebook has a data center in Luleå, which has helped to give the place a cosmopolitan feel – well, for northern Sweden, anyway – and there are also some decent dining options. If you have time left over after exploring Luleå itself, there are a few great little day trips nearby.
